    Council Tax - Your Data and Data Sharing

    filesWe are always striving to work more efficiently and to enhance services for your benefit.

    During the course of conducting its business, the Council Tax Service collects and retains on its database personal information, such as names and addresses of council tax payers. That information can be used by other departments within the council to improve working practices and the delivery of the services.

    We will only share this information on a strictly controlled and regulated basis. We are currently intending to allow the use of information for:

    • proof of residence for debt recovery purposes
    • proof of identity as a means of using on-line services
    • use of an address as proof of entitlement for certain financial concessions
    • fulfilling our legal obligations to disclose information to external bodies such as the police, Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs and The Child Support Agency.

    Data Sharing

    We have a duty to protect the public funds we administer, and to this end we may use the information you have provided (for council tax purposes) for the prevention and detection of fraud. 

    We may also share this information with other bodies for auditing or administering public funds. 

    Data Matching

    In order to protect public funds and ensure that Council Tax discounts are correctly claimed, the Council may data match with other internal or external data bases.

    • Credit Rating Agencies
