Second Review coverThe East Hampshire District Local Plan: Second Review

East Hampshire is an extremely attractive area in which to live and work. We need to make sure it stays that way. To help us manage how the district develops, we have prepared a Local Plan.

    What is the Local Plan?

Land is a limited resource under increasing pressure to provide buildings to meet our needs for new homes, jobs, shops, leisure community facilities and open space.

The task of the Local Plan is planning for the future use of land. It is there to make sure we protect the character of our towns, villages and the surrounding countryside.

How the Local Plan is used

Once a Local Plan is adopted all planning applications for development have to be judged against its policies. It is very important in setting out the overall distribution of land uses but is also central to every planning application which is submitted in the district.

We first adopted a Local Plan for East Hampshire in 1993. The First Review of the District Local Plan was adopted in 1998.

    The Second Review Local Plan

The Second Review Local Plan was adopted at the end of March 2006.  It took into account an Inspector's report which looked at objections to the council's proposals. This version brings the proposals up to date and takes the Local Plan up to 2011.

Most of the Local Plan policies will continue to be saved until they are replaced by the Local Development Framework. Some policies were removed from 1 April 2009 by the Government Office for the South East. Find out more about the saved policies in 'related documents'.

The Local Plan will be superceded by the Local Development Framework, which we are working on at the moment. Find out more about the Local Development Framework below.

See the Second Review Local Plan in full and the Inspectors Report in 'related documents' (if you are unsure how to find what you want, click on 'Local Plan Help').

Alternatively copies of the Second Review are available to purchase from our offices at Penns Place, Petersfield.  You can also order a copy by calling on   01730 234270.

Release of reserve housing sites in the south of the district

In order to secure a five year housing land supply, it was agreed by EHDC on 14 May 2008 that the 'reserve' housing sites in the south of the district be released for development.  The report explaining the reasoning behind this decision can be viewed using the link at the bottom of this page.
